Violet Irene Read

Violet Irene Read, 98, of Port Charlotte, FL and previously of Washington, NJ passed away on April 29, 2024.

Violet was born on July 31, 1925 in Phillipsburg, NJ to the late Raymond and Amy Smith (nee. Martin).

She owned and operated the Washington News Company with her husband, Russell W. Read from 1960 to 1987. Violet was a member of the Washington United Methodist Church for many years until moving to Florida. She enjoyed the outdoors and maintaining her flower garden.

Violet is survived by her son, David Read of Washington, NJ and a daughter in law Terry Read of Illinois. She also leaves behind grandchildren; Tammy, Russ III, Tina, Dave Jr., Jeremy, Monica, Tara, Steven, and Valgry and 15 great- grandchildren and 8 great- great grandchildren.

In addition to her parents she is predeceased by her husband, Russell who passed in 2011, her son, Russell Jr. who passed in 1989, her daughter, Melissa who passed in 2016 and her daughter in law, Myra who passed in March of 2024

A memorial service celebrating Violet’s life will take place on Sunday, June 23, 2024 at 11:00 AM at the Greenstone United Methodist Church in Washington, NJ.

In lieu of flowers donations can be made in Violet’s name to the Greenstone United Methodist Church.
