Robert J. Blackwood

Robert J. Blackwood, of Washington, New Jersey, passed away peacefully at his home on July 3, 2026 surrounded by his loving family. He was 93 years old.

Born on December 16, 1932, in Paterson, New Jersey, Robert was the son of the late Gregg Willison Blackwood and Alice (Boer) Blackwood. He graduated from Washington High School, Class of 1951 and proudly served his country in the United States Naval Reserve.

Robert dedicated many years of his career as a telecommunications technician with AT&T before retiring in 1989. Never one to remain idle, he later established his own landscaping business and eventually served as a contracted mail courier for the Warren County Special Services Department.

A man who truly enjoyed the outdoors, Robert found great happiness in motorcycling, fishing, hunting, boating, gardening, and bicycling. He was deeply devoted to his community and faithfully served for 20 years as a member of the Washington Township Fire Department, where he held the positions of Lieutenant and Secretary.

Robert was a lifelong member of Washington Grange No. 117, joining at the age of 17, and was also a proud member of IBEW Local 827 and an active member of the Polar Bear Motorcycle Club. His faith was the cornerstone of his life. He was a longtime active member of Washington United Methodist Church and most recently attended the Chapel at Warren Valley. He also dedicated many years to leading prison ministry programs at the Warren County Jail, sharing his faith, compassion, and encouragement with countless individuals.

Known for his wisdom, remarkable patience, and generous spirit, Robert was always willing to lend a helping hand to anyone in need. His quiet strength, unwavering kindness, and steadfast love for his family and community will be remembered by all who knew him.

Robert was predeceased by his beloved wife of 68 years, Lois Jean (Kinney) Blackwood, who passed away in 2020; his parents; and his sister, Nancy Smith as well as many nieces, nephews and beloved in-laws.

He is lovingly survived by his son, Gregory Blackwood and his wife Nancy of Stewartsville, NJ; his daughter, Linda Drake and her husband George of Washington, NJ; his daughter, Debra Gregor and her husband Jim of Lake Hopatcong, NJ; his son, Glenn Blackwood of Washington, NJ; and his daughter-in-law, Adrienne Blackwood of Washington, NJ. He is also survived by his cherished grandchildren, Laurel Blackwood, Allison Sisto and her husband Tim, Nathan Blackwood and his wife Sharon, Kevin Drake and his wife Samantha, Jake Gregor, Robert Gregor, Sarah Gregor, Zachary Blackwood, Jacqueline Blackwood, Christopher Blackwood, and Daniel Blackwood; as well as his beloved great-grandchildren, Julia and Nicholas Sisto, Anthony and Vincent Drake, and Ethan Blackwood.

Family and friends may pay their respects on Friday, July 10, 2026, from 10:00 a.m. until 12:00 p.m. at Warren Hills Memorial Home, 234 West Washington Avenue, Washington, New Jersey.

A service celebrating Robert's life will begin at 12:00 p.m. at the funeral home. Interment will immediately follow at Musconetcong Valley Cemetery, Hampton, New Jersey.
