Oscar M. Benavides Aguilar, 57, passed away suddenly on July 22nd, 2026, in Clinton Township, New Jersey.
Oscar was born on February 16th, 1969, in San Jose, Costa Rica, to Ramiro Benavides and Angela Aguilar. He grew up in Costa Rica, where he developed a remarkable work ethic from an early age. His father often shared that Oscar made a down payment on a farm at just 11 years old and, through years of hard work and determination, paid it off by the age of 22.
In 2000, Oscar immigrated to the United States in pursuit of a better future, where he also ended up starting a family. He soon established OBA Landscaping, a business he built with pride through his dedication and commitment to his customers. In addition to operating his landscaping business, Oscar worked as a Second Shift Grocery Manager at ShopRite in Clinton for 22 years, where he earned the respect and friendship of both his coworkers and customers.
In 2003, Oscar married his wife, Alise O’Brien. Together they built a loving home and shared two beautiful children in addition to his two wonderful sons from previous relationships.
Oscar had a real appreciation and passion for life. He enjoyed dancing and singing, was an avid fan of the Saprissa soccer team, and loved riding horses. He loved animals, his dogs especially, and had a real talent in art. He was also bright as a whip, oftentimes doing complex math in his head. He oftentimes never shared some of these talents, but instead let his family discover them through real connections and happenstance. Above all else, he treasured the time he spent with his family. He had an immense love for his four children and cared deeply for his extended family. Oscar was a highly sociable man, most generous with his time. He loved to people watch and especially loved time spent with the elderly. He never failed to disappoint with his shining smile, often enveloping family, friends, and even customers in his kindness. He had a wonderful sense of humor everyone could enjoy. His generous heart, tireless work ethic, and unwavering love for those closest to him will be remembered by all who knew him.
Oscar is survived by his beloved wife, Alise Benavides; his children, Jordy Benavides, Manfred Barquero, Samira Benavides, and Saul Benavides; his sisters, Alice, Olga, Rosemary and Nela Benavides Aguilar; along with many extended family members and dear friends in both the United States and Costa Rica.
Family and friends are invited to pay their respects on Friday, July 31st, 2026, from 5:00 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. at the funeral home.
Burial will take place in Costa Rica at a later date.
