Mario Nicholas Guarriello, Sr.
August 5, 1932 – November 30, 2025
Mario Nicholas Guarriello, Sr., of East Stroudsburg, PA, passed away peacefully at home on Sunday, November 30, 2025, with his loving wife, Cynthia, by his side.
Mario was born on August 5, 1932, in Paterson, New Jersey. He was the youngest of six children born to Anthony and Esther (Matarazzo) Guarriello. He spent his early years in Connecticut before the family settled in Washington, New Jersey. A proud graduate of Washington High School, Class of 1952, Mario enlisted in the United States Army shortly after graduation. He served honorably with the 1st Cavalry, spending two years in Korea.
Mario discovered his love for flying at a young age and went on to become an accomplished pilot, skilled in both airplanes and helicopters. He had a lifelong passion for World War II aircraft and was given the rare thrill of piloting a P-51 Mustang—an experience he cherished throughout his life.
In early 1955, Mario began working at Oxford Textile in Oxford, New Jersey. Over the years, through dedication and determination, he rose to the position of junior partner. In 1979, he took over the company, successfully operating it for many years until its closing in 2003.
Mario was a true force of nature—driven, energetic, and endlessly hardworking. Yet, he was equally known for his kind and caring heart. He lived a full and remarkable life and will be remembered with deep love and respect for generations to come.
Mario is survived by his devoted wife of 25 years, Cynthia Kitchen Guarriello; and his five children: Nicholas Guarriello, Sr. and his wife Michele (Shelly) of Washington, NJ; Mario Guarriello, Jr. and his wife Maria of Belvidere, NJ; Vincent Guarriello and his wife Janine of East Stroudsburg, PA; Alice Hissim and her husband Michael of Washington, NJ; and Gina Guarriello of Green Township, NJ.
He is also survived by nine grandchildren, all of whom he adored: Nicholas Guarriello, Jr., Sarah Rapp, Mario Guarriello III, Marissa Guarriello, Amy Rutledge, Veronica Rutledge, Elizabeth Hissim, Sasha Carlson, and Kerri Sabator; as well as ten great-grandchildren. In addition, Mario is survived by his first wife, Mildred, the mother of his children.
He leaves behind his 3 stepchildren, all of whom he loved as his own: Janean Fey and her husband Michael of Bangor, PA; Megan Denker of Russell, NY; and Debra Craig and her husband David of Norristown, PA; along with 11 step-grandchildren who brought him great joy.
In addition to his parents, Mario was predeceased by his brother Anthony; sisters Concetta, Michelina, Lillian, and Alice; and his second wife, Janet Guarriello.
