Joseph John "JJ" Katarba, 50, of Washington, New Jersey, passed away peacefully on June 1, 2026, surrounded by his loving family and friends.
Born on March 18, 1976, in Washington, New Jersey, JJ was the son of Amelia "Millie" Colucci Katarba and the late Joel S. Katarba.
A graduate of Warren Hills High School, Class of 1994, JJ spent many years working as an auto mechanic at H&K & Sons Auto Body in Phillipsburg and later at New Village. Through his work and outgoing personality, he made countless friends and never missed an opportunity to strike up a conversation. JJ genuinely enjoyed meeting people and had a gift for making others feel welcome.
JJ was a devoted animal lover, especially when it came to his beloved dogs, Zeus and Tequila. His compassion for animals led him to volunteer with Common Sense for Animals, where he generously gave his time and support. He always rooted for the underdog, whether it was a person, an animal, or a cause in need of a champion.
An avid outdoorsman, JJ enjoyed hunting and fishing throughout his life. In later years, he developed a passion for RC cars, collecting model trains, and buying and selling items on eBay. He was also a lifelong truck enthusiast and owned several favorite trucks over the years.
JJ shared many memorable adventures with his close friends, Dave Schrorbusch and Louie Albaghatto. Together, they attended car shows, enjoyed great meals, and spent countless hours laughing and making memories. JJ was known for his good sense of humor, his fun-loving nature, and his ability to bring a smile to those around him.
Family meant everything to JJ. He cherished the time he spent with his cousins, aunts, uncles, grandparents, nieces, and nephews. He especially enjoyed watching sports with his father, cheering on the New York Yankees and New York Giants. JJ also loved Halloween and looked forward each year to dressing up and attending Halloween parties with friends.
JJ will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him, especially his devoted mother.
In addition to his mother, Amelia "Millie" Katarba, he is survived by his niece, Michaela Tomanelli; his nephew, Dominic Tomanelli; and many loving cousins and extended family members.
JJ was predeceased by his father, Joel S. Katarba; his sister, Tara Katarba-Tomanelli; and several beloved aunts and uncles.
