Guy N. Burd, 93, a lifelong resident of Washington, passed away peacefully on May 26, 2026.
Guy was born at home in Washington on June 17, 1932, to the late Alvin and Margaret “Nixon” Burd.
Guy graduated from Washington High School, Class of 1952. He was a skilled wrestler, placing second in the state finals. Guy joined the United States Army and served his country proudly during the Korean War. He began working as an auto body worker for Burd Chevrolet. In 1960, he rented the garage at 237 W. Washington Ave. and operated the now-iconic Guy’s Getty. In 1978, he purchased the building, and the historic gas station continues to be operated today by his son and grandsons and is called Guy’s Auto.
Guy also cared deeply about his community. He joined the Washington Borough Fire Department in 1956 and served as Chief from 1984 to 1985. He was also a member of the New Jersey State Exempt Firemen’s Association and American Legion Post 103. Guy later worked for many years as the Borough Fire Inspector. He also enjoyed hunting, fishing, and bowling.
Guy is survived by his wife, Joyce; her children Phil, Marj, and Bill; and his children, Guy Burd Sr. (Rosemary Barcellona) and LuAnn Jankowski (Joe); his grandsons, Guy Burd Jr., Michael Burd (Karin), Anthony Jankowski (Erika), and Andrew Jankowski (Stephanie); 10 great-grandchildren; and 3 great-great-grandchildren; also a brother-in-law George Bacskai (MaryAnn).
In addition to his parents, Guy was preceded in death by his first wife, Ann H. Burd “Bacskai”; his brother, Donald Burd (Phyllis); and his sister, Carol Conroy (Warren).
Family and friends may pay their respects on Sunday, May 31, 2026, from 2:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. at Warren Hills Memorial Home. A firefighters service will begin at 4:45 p.m. and conclude the visitation. A funeral service celebrating Guy’s life will be held on Monday, June 1, 2026, at 11:00 a.m. at the funeral home. Interment will follow at Montana Mountain Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to American Legion Post 103, P.O. Box 211, Washington, NJ 07882, or to the Washington Borough Fire Department, 100 Belvidere Ave., Washington, NJ 07882. Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to Warren Hills Memorial Home.
