Guy Herbert Burd, “Herbie,” 76, of Millsboro, Delaware, passed away suddenly on May 14, 2026, at Beebe Healthcare.

Herbie was born on March 16, 1950, in Groton, Connecticut, to the late Donald and Phyllis “Taft” Burd. He was a member of the first graduating class of Warren Hills Regional High School in 1968, where he ran cross country and played basketball. He later attended Appalachian State University.

Herbie joined the United States Navy in 1970 and proudly served during the Vietnam War aboard the USS Independence (CV-62). After returning home from the service, he married his soulmate, Deborah “Stauffer,” in 1976.

Herbie was co-owner of Guy’s Getty in Washington for many years and later was employed as a chemical materials handler for BASF in Washington before retiring in 2006. He also worked briefly for Delaware State Park Services. Herbie was a member of the Washington Borough Fire Department. He was also a member of American Legion Post 28 in Millsboro, DE and a player/manager for the Olde Tymer's Softball League. He is set to be inducted into their Hall Of Fame later this month.

He enjoyed playing softball, bowling, horseshoes, and cornhole. He also coached his son's youth baseball and basketball teams. He assisted Debbie with coaching junior field hockey teams. He loved traveling with his family, especially historical sites (the man loved himself a fort). Herbie enjoyed watching the Baltimore Orioles and their minor league affiliate the Delmarva Shorebirds. He generously volunteered his time with organizations such as Wreaths Across America, as well as participating in beach cleanups along the Delaware coast.

Herbie is survived by his loving wife, Debbie; his son, Cory Burd; his siblings, Donna Golda (John), Patricia Burd and her husband James Sisk, Linda Burd and her husband Ralph Anema, Cynthia Wildermuth (Steve), and Scott Burd (Deborah); and his grandchildren, Madison and Taylor Hurley and many nieces, nephews and cousins.  In addition to his parents, Herbie was predeceased by his brother, Jeffrey Burd.

Family and friends may pay their respects on Wednesday, May 20, 2026, from 3:00–6:00 PM at Warren Hills Memorial Home. A funeral service celebrating Herbie’s life will be held on Thursday, May 21, 2026, at 11:00 AM at the funeral home. Interment will follow at Montana Mountain Cemetery.
