Martin L. Fleming
August 17, 1924 - September 10, 2004
Martin L Fleming, 80, of Palmer Township,
died Friday, September 10, 2004, in Easton Hospital, following
a five year battle with cancer.
Born: August 17, 1924, in Hampton, a son of
the late William and Nellie Michaelis Fleming.
Personal: He and his wife, the former Shirley
A. Douma, observed their 42nd wedding anniversary on September
8th.
He resided in Palmer Township for six years. Previously, he
had resided in Washington where he lived most of his life in
homes that he had personally built.
Mr. Fleming was employed by the New Jersey Water Supply Authority
in Clinton for more than 20 years, retiring as structural foreman
in 1987. Prior to that he was a self-employed carpenter with
Droppa and Fleming Construction, building many homes in the
Washington area.
An Army Veteran of World War II, he was a PFC in the 29th Division,
116th Infantry. He served in the European Theater and was involved
with the D-Day Invasion of Normandy, landing on Omaha Beach.
Mr. Fleming was awarded many honors, among them a Bronze Star
and a Purple Heart. He was a life time member of the Disabled
American Veterans.
He enjoyed carpentry projects and hunting. He was an avid mall-walker
at the Phillipsburg Mall for over 10 years, meeting many wonderful
people. He also enjoyed Wednesday lunches with the Romeos. He
was known to many as “Pappy” and to his grandchildren as “Poppy”.
Survivors: his wife; two sons, Martin W. and
his wife, Kim P., of Newton, N.J. and Wayne F. and his wife,
Sheryl A., of Lebanon, N.J.; two daughters, Jodi L. and her
husband, Thomas W. Williams, of Palmer Township and Kim L. and
her husband, Joseph J. Carpenter, of Allentown; three grandsons,
Christopher, Dakota, and Anthony; three granddaughters, Vanessa,
Tina and Delaney; two brothers, Robert and Markley, both of
Phillipsburg; and numerous nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by two brothers, Carl and Oscar, and a sister
Frieda.
Services: 11 am Wednesday in Warren Hills
/ Ford Memorial Home, 234 West Washington Ave., Washington,
with the Rev. James Scovell officiating. Call 6 to 9 p.m. Tuesday
in the funeral home. Burial with full military honors will be
